1 Corinthians 9:7–14
The Right of Gospel Workers to Material Support
Key Verse:
v.14 — “The Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel.”
Exegetical Notes:
Paul argues from:
Common labor principle (soldier, farmer, shepherd)
Mosaic Law (Deut 25:4 — muzzle the ox)
Temple system (priests share in offerings)
Culmination: Jesus Himself commanded this principle.
This is not optional generosity — it is apostolic instruction.
Theological Claim:
Material support for gospel laborers is rooted in divine command, not sentiment.
Philippians 4:14–18
Partnership in the Gospel
Key Ideas:
Paul thanks the church for “sharing” (koinōneō) in his affliction.
Their financial gift is described as:
“A fragrant offering”
“Acceptable and pleasing to God”
Exegetical Notes:
Financial support is framed as worship.
The language echoes sacrificial terminology.
The gift is given to Paul but received by God.
Theological Claim:
Supporting missionaries is participation in gospel ministry and an act of worship.
Galatians 6:6
Shared Material Good
“Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches.”
Exegetical Notes:
“Share” = κοινωνείτω (koinōneitō) — active partnership.
“All good things” includes material provision.
Context is covenant community life.
Theological Claim:
Those who receive spiritual instruction bear responsibility to materially support teachers.
Supporting Missionaries Sent Out
Key Phrase:
“You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner worthy of God.”
Exegetical Notes:
“Send” implies financial and logistical support.
Missionaries went out “for the sake of the Name.”
Supporting them makes believers “fellow workers for the truth.”
Theological Claim:
Those who financially support missionaries become co-laborers in the mission.
The Laborer Deserves His Wages
Jesus instructs the seventy-two:
“The laborer deserves his wages.”
Exegetical Notes:
Spoken directly by Christ.
Applied to itinerant gospel workers.
Cited later by Paul as authoritative support for ministry compensation.
Theological Claim:
Jesus Himself affirms financial support for gospel workers.
Scripture teaches that those who proclaim the gospel are to be supported by those who benefit from their labor (1 Cor. 9:14; Gal. 6:6). The Lord Himself affirmed that “the laborer deserves his wages” (Luke 10:7), and the apostles described financial partnership as participation in the work of the gospel (Phil. 4:15–18; 3 John 8). Giving is therefore not charity, but covenant partnership — an act of worship and shared labor in advancing the finished work of Christ.
